Mount Everest Is on AllTrails. The Reviews Are Priceless.
  1. The mountain of my dreams I have a confession: When I was a wee little teenager searching desperately for a way to validate my wee little life, I wanted to climb Mount Everest. Shameful, I know! But I was just a kid. And this was back in the blissfully ignorant early 2000s, less than a decade removed from John...

Küat Recalls 80K Hitch Bike Racks Over Drop Risk
If you own a Küat Transfer v2 bike rack, stop using it immediately or have it fixed. Thats the message from Küat, which announced a recall of more than 80,000 Transfer v2 bike racks last week after customers complained of a potential defect. In a statement on its website, the outdoor retailer said the pivot cam on the rack can...
Trailside Charging Stations Are the Future: Polaris Partnership Builds Network to Power Off-Road Adventures
Our caravan of five Polaris Ranger side-by-sides had to cross a bridge over a creek where there was a lone man fishing, enjoying the isolation and peace of the backcountry in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I felt horrible, as I had done for decades when trying to coexist with other outdoor enthusiasts while enjoying off-road motorsports. But this encounter...
How Many Carbs Are in Spring Energy, Really?
For the past 10 years, Spring Energy has provided endurance athletes with energy gels, and more recently drink mixes, made from “real” foods. Athletes looking for wholesome alternatives to more traditional sugar-based gels made in a lab have flocked to Spring’s smoothie-like gels made with fruit and basmati rice. While Spring products are more expensive than many gels, many athletes...
We Asked Our Dads About the Oldest Gear They Still Use
Like many of our readers, we were fortunate enough to grow up with outdoorsy dads who helped guide us toward a lifelong love of playing outside. We took the time to call up our dads (hint, hint) to give them some love and chat with them about their favorite moments outside. Many of them are still rocking gear from their...
Blown Away: Craft Women’s ADV Essence Wind Running Tights Review
Ive lived in the third coldest valley in the lower 48 for more than 10 years. While searching for the best womens winter running tights, I cant say Ive gotten used to that piece of mountain life: -30 is still bone-chilling. The snow and chilly wind stick around through spring, well into May. True summer — without longstanding freezing temps...
This Breckenridge Chef Just Won an “Oscar of the Food World”
Matt Vawter, chef and owner of Rootstalk and Radicato in Breckenridge, Colorado, has been to Chicago twice for the James Beard Awards, often called the Oscars of the Food World. In 2018, Vawter was there to cheer on his mentor (and boss at the time) Alex Seidel when the Denver chef was nominated for Best Chef: Mountain. Seidel won that...
Is Your Backcountry Skincare Routine Attracting Mosquitos?
Most hikers know not to carry too many scented products into the backcountry—but new research shows it’s not just bears they could be attracting. According to a 2023 paper, perfumes and soaps—especially those with natural, plant-derived scents—can act like mosquito magnets. The same is true of scented deodorants, sunscreens, and other skincare products. You might read that and be tempted...
The CJRB Hectare Does Everything the Most Famous EDC Outdoor Knife Can, for $100+ Less
There are so many folding knives aimed at the outdoors these days that theres bound to be some overlap. In some cases, that overlap might even be intentional —so intentional, in fact, that when you Google one knife and another one comes up in the results, you can confirm youre not crazy. This is really happening. For years, the Benchmade...
The Best Knee Pads for Mountain Biking
There are endless choices when it comes to mountain bike knee protection. We tested ten options while running hot laps on local trails, barreling down bike parks, and grinding out all-day alpine adventures. At the end of the day, these four knee pads stood out as the most pedal-friendly options thanks to their compact size, versatility, and comfort. Best Value:...
How to Choose a Hiking Hat That Fits Your Personality
Apologies to anyone who encountered me on the Pacific Crest Trail in July 2021, rabidly racing in circles through the wondrous Marble Valley in the northernmost reaches of California. Indeed, had you been peering down from Marble Rim, which juts from the brilliant forest like some rough-hewn countertop slab, and watched me sprint around the meadow below, you would have...
