Description

Lighten your pack without sacrificing space with the ultralight, semi-freestanding FreeLite 2, designed for people who want to make the most of their three-season adventures without being weighed down by their gear.

The Inside: Half a pound (226 g) lighter than the previous FreeLite, it still has the true rectangular floor (no foot taper like most other tents) and 39 inches (1.00 m) of headroom, 3 inches more than before. The micromesh tent body provides excellent ventilation (and stargazing) and has a waterproof bathtub-style floor to protect from the elements. Two no-curve tent doors keep you from having to crawl over your partner in the middle of the night, and feature zippers that are easy to use with one hand. They also zip closed to a single point so you always know where to open the door, even in the dark. New tech-friendly pockets feature cable ports at the corners for headphone and charging cords. Overhead gear loft pockets are perfect for headlamps, sunglasses and other quick-access items.

The Outside: The FreeLite’s semi-freestanding design is easy and quick to set up. Super-strong DAC NFL tent poles, a DuraShield™ waterproof coating and taped seams keep the weather where it belongs—outside. The cutaway rainfly saves weight and features large vestibules for storing any gear you don’t want inside. Easy in-and-out vestibule doors have StayDry™ rain gutters to keep water from dripping onto you and your gear.

The Bottom Line: If you and your backpacking buddy (two- or four-legged) want camp comfort after putting down the miles with your ultralight pack, the semi-freestanding FreeLite 2 provides the space and features you need at a weight you won’t even notice.

WARNING for California customers: Cancer and reproductive harm

Is Your Local Bouldering Area in Trouble? Call the Zoo.
At the summit of North Carolina’s Ridges Mountain lie hundreds of bulbous black boulders whose splitter cracks and vexing friction problems have long tested climbers during winter months when temperatures drop at the mountainous crags around Boone and Asheville. But the Asheboro Boulders, created from granitic rock formations more than 586 million years old, have also drawn the interest of...

Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail
At the time, I thought I was a genius. I was about 250 miles into the Pacific Crest Trail, still a relative novice. It was lunchtime, and as I looked through my food bag, I saw the usual suspects: ramen packets, peanut butter, and lots of high calorie snacks. I considered getting out my stove and cooking a “ramen bomb”—combining...
Making It Look Way Too Easy: Dane Jackson Delivers in 2023 Highlight Reel
Its pretty easy to make the argument that Dane Jackson is one of the very best — if not the best — whitewater kayakers on the planet, maybe ever. He was raised on the road traveling the world in a kayak, and continues that pursuit to this day. In 2023, Dane turned 30, got engaged, and won his fifth...
What Jazz Legend Miles Davis Taught Me About Teaching Yoga
“You have to learn the rules before you can break them.” —Miles Davis I first heard those words from one of the most innovative and influential jazz musicians of all time during the How I Built This podcast. In the interview, chef Daniel Humm explained how understanding that quote shaped his approach to creating Eleven Madison Park, his world-renowned, plant-based...

Cooper Tires Discoverer AT3 Review: Sticky When Slick
The blizzard was somewhat unexpected. I woke in Breckenridge, Colo., to 8 inches of fresh snow and more in the air. Id planned to go skiing, but a stomach bug and a pending chore stymied my plans. I needed to get up to Leadville to grab some gear for a buddy, and the roads would be horrible. Oh well, I...

The 4 Types of Archery Bows: Recurve, Longbow, Compound, and Crossbow
Theres something distinctly human about archery. Archers have carried bows for thousands of years. Purified Water on the Go, Just Add Salt: Aqua Research H2gO Global Purifier Review
With over 30 years of hiking, backpacking, and camping, I’ve used my fair share of water filters. For years, I swore by the MSR MiniWorks. Then I used its HyperFlow Microfilter for a while. Recently, I’ve been using a Grayl Purifier. Overall, my experience with these devices has been great. However, all three rely on filters and elements that eventually...
