They designed the cot to have a low 12 inch profile, balancing the need for a comfortable height above the ground while still being low enough to work within a tent or tarp. The X-Leg design not only allows for smart folding for stowing, but also creates a tension that responds to the weight of the person lying on the cot (the more weight, the more tension).
