“The Best Storyteller on the Planet.” Loved Ones Remember Everest Icon David Breashears.
Outdoor enthusiasts lost a master of adventure storytelling earlier this month, when David Breashears died at age 68 at his home in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Breashears was a pioneer of filmmaking in the high mountains, and his documentaries about Mount Everest and the Himalayas brought millions of viewers up close to the famed peaks. His 1998 film, Everest, was the first to...
Jeep Rolls 8.5 Times in Record-Setting ‘Fall Guy’ Movie Stunt
Its now clear that Hollywoods overreliance on computer-generated effects has resulted in a renewed appreciation for old-school movie magic. From Christopher Nolans DIY atomic bomb in Oppenheimer to the gun fu extravagance of the John Wick films, audiences have welcomed the return of practical effects to the big screen. But audiences still want to be wowed, and that means pushing...
Man Pleads Guilty to Bald Eagle ‘Killing Spree,’ Accomplice Still at Large
Over 6 years, two men conspired to illegally kill 3,600 birds in Montana and sell them on the black market, federal officials said this week. One of those men, 48-year-old Travis John Branson of Washington, has pled guilty to the scheme and could face years in prison and a hefty fine. His co-defendant, 42-year-old Simon Paul of Montana, did not...

I Photographed Every Mile of the Colorado River. Here’s What I Learned.
On a warm April morning, I gaze at a ghost tree towering above me. Its leafless canopy seems to be staring up as well, in similar disbelief, at the 500-foot-high sandstone cliffs surrounding us. There’s a cluster of 70-foot-tall cottonwoods on this river-bottom spot, dead for decades yet seemingly frozen between the worlds of the living and the dead. Their...
MTN Dew Launches ‘Outdoor Gear’ Rewards — You’re Gonna Have to Drink A LOT
Soda companies hiding codes in caps for rewards is nothing new. But when MTN Dew teamed up with some high-profile brands to badge its own line of outdoor gear — cleverly named MDOG — I took notice. If you dont mind the MTN Dew aesthetic, neon green-on-midnight black — you could earn a Hydro Flask bottle, The North Face sleeping bag, GoPro camera,...

Alterra Bought Arapahoe Basin. Can the Resort Keep Its Soul?
Arapahoe Basin has always been about as far from a megaresort as a ski area can be. It’s a place where the entire staff shows up at 5:30 a.m. to shovel snow on a powder day, where you’ll find the chief operating officer parking cars or taking out the trash, and where all proceeds from its most popular events go...

My Friends Won’t Clean My Groover. Should I Stop Bringing It?
Dear Sundog: A few years ago I bought a groover for river trips, thinking it a necessary bit of group gear. My river friends didn’t own one, and we always had to scramble to borrow/rent/steal one for each trip. It was expensive, like $400, once I got the accompanying seat and rocket boxes that fit into my rowing frame, but...
