Description

The Black Diamond StoneHauler 45L is the duffel you want for quick missions, whether you're blasting to the desert for a weekend of climbing or flying home for a family visit. Sized at 45 liters, this duffel protects your essential gear, thanks to the side-to-side padded body construction which is unique to Black Diamond's StoneHauler duffels and consists of 5mm closed cell foam for puncture and fabric abrasion resistance while carrying gear such as quickdraws, trekking poles, or a rack of cams.

This duffel carries comfortably like a backpack, thanks to the removable fully-featured EVA foam shoulder straps and adjustable sternum strap. Two interior zipper pockets and one exterior zipper pocket allows you to keep valuables organized, and the mono-mesh ID pocket let's everyone know it's yours. Wrapping the entire exterior of each duffel is BD's Haul-loop carry system; a continuous, bomber tubular webbing loop tested to 2kN by the same machines that load test their carabiners and Camalots. After years of steady improvement, the typical new car, truck, and crossover models have started having long-term reliability problems, according to a new study by J.D. Power. You might think of this as the long-term version of “long COVID,” as many of the problems are related to hardware and software issues related to the chip shortages manufacturers faced during the...
Track-Capable Everyday Driver: Nokian Tyres Surpass AS01 Review
Mashing the accelerator on a Mercedes C300, I fly toward the wet pavement on a racetrack in Las Vegas. I push the brake hard and whip the wheel just feet from the corner. Tires squeal and water flies as I quickly jump back on the gas, pushing the car around the tight turn and holding on for dear life. Go,...
More Comfort, Less Durability: Chaco CushZ Sandal Review
My feet keep finding their way back to Chacos softer sandals. From day-long walks through the humid heat of Medellin, Colombia, to short hikes along Georgia rivers, followed by nights around a campfire, my hard-working feet are reluctant to leave the extra support offered by Chacos CushZ. Of course, these arent radically different from the Chaco Z/1, the classic sandal...
‘Darth Grader’: A New Mathematical Way to Grade Rock Climbs
Climbing grades differ by region or even by crag within the same area. Some routes or boulders may be graded by the hardest move, while others feel like they factor in rests. Ultimately, the grade boils down to the perception of the technical difficulty, steepness, and effort needed to clip the chains. Climbers have done their best to keep grading...

Why Steeper Is Cheaper for Climbing Hills
Consider this age-old dilemma: you’re at the bottom of a hill, and you want to get to the top. Should you head straight up the steepest slope or switchback back and forth at a gentler incline? The answer depends on the context. If you’re on a marked trail, for example, you should definitely stick to the prescribed switchbacks. But a...
‘A Feeling You Can Have Only Once’: Climber Scores 4th Ascent of Yosemite’s Dawn Wall
Few climbs have captured our collective imagination quite like The Dawn Wall. This notoriously difficult route on El Capitan became a crucible for legendary climber Tommy Caldwell, who spent years developing it. When Caldwell and partner Kevin Jorgeson finally ascended the entire route in 2015, their triumph became a seminal moment in the history of rock climbing. It has only...
