EVs Unplugged: New Report Shows Slowing Sales, Forecasts Growth
Electric vehicle (EV) sales are likely to stagnate at the same level as 2024, when all-electric models hit a record 9.1% of the U.S. market, according to a recent report by J.D. Power. While the lack of a robust public charging network is part of the problem, the latest J.D. Power E-Vision Intelligence Report also sees the new Trump administration...
The 9 Best Presidents’ Day Sales on Outdoor Gear
Presidents’ Day might not be as known for its deals like Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, or Labor Day are, but it’s actually an underrated time to score some savings. Whether you’re looking for discounted ski and snowboard equipment to make the most of winter, or you’re shopping for camping, surfing, or biking gear to get prepped for spring and summer, you’ll...
Lynn Hill Isn’t Done Climbing
My memoir Climbing Free focused on the first 25 years of my life as a climber. This reflection is about the next 25 years of my life as a climber and mother. I couldn’t have imagined that what started out as a simple outing in 1975 with my two older sisters, my brother, and my sister’s boyfriend Chuck would become...

Here’s What Dietitians Want Hikers to Know About Eating on the Trail
I am not going to stand here in front of God and Backpacker‘s readers and pretend I always, or even usually, eat healthy on my trips. I eat loose Swedish Fish from my hipbelt pockets while I hike and wolf down instant ramen like I’m a broke college student and rent is due. I once stuffed an entire box of...
The Lightest Inflatable Sleeping Pad on the Market: Nemo Tensor Elite Review
The trail up Mt. Katadyn, the northern terminus and highest peak along the Appalachian Trail, often sits above the clouds and cuts through car-sized boulder fields to reach the summit. Gripping a rebar ladder rung on a vertical rock face, I carefully pick another spot for my foot. I now understand why the rangers here have a fleet of daypacks...
Pretty and Gritty: Artisan Cutlery Holm Folding Knife Review
Christmas was filled with laughter, cheer, and a knock on the door from the FedEx guy — and he wasn’t delivering my “Jelly of the Month Club” package. Instead, he came bearing a box from Artisan Cutlery containing the Holm, one of the most elegantly finished knives Ive seen in quite some time. Known for its affordable knives and common...
7 Core-Strengthening Exercises That Every Athlete Needs
For most of the 20 years that I’ve been a competitive runner, I’ve intentionally disregarded yoga. I assumed that it wouldn’t offer anything meaningful to my workout routine. But as I’ve become older—and, it seems, wiser—I’ve found the exact opposite to be true. Especially when it comes to the benefits I experience from core-strengthening exercises in yoga and what they...
Does Your Smartwatch Band Contain Forever Chemicals?
A new study published in the American Chemical Society’s Environmental Science and Technology Letters is raising concerns about the pervasive presence of “forever chemicals” – also known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) – in something many triathletes have on their bodies 24/7: watch bands. These synthetic chemicals, notorious for their persistence in the environment and human body, are now...
Technical Touring Pack for Fast & Light Skiers: Black Diamond Cirque 25 Review
It’s the winter solstice in Southcentral Alaska, and I only have 5 hours of daylight. As I gained the summit ridge, its 2 p.m., and the sun is already starting to dip below the horizon. Needing to move fast to get back down before dark, I attached my skis to my pack without removing them and pounded up the boot track...

Comedian Scott Losse Didn’t Set Out to Joke About Outdoor Recreation
Standup comedian Scott Losse didnt set out to make fun of mountain biking, snowboarding, and other recreational activities on his Instagram feed. Like many professional comics, Losse, 44, spent several years recording videos of his observational humor to see what resonated with his audience. He mused on the banalities of middle-aged life, weather in Seattle, and shopping at Costco. But...
