Woom Bikes USA recalled 2,500 bikes last week due to reports of crank failures, including one report of an injury to a child. According to an official recall posted by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), owners of woom OFF, OFF AIR, and ORIGINAL kids bikes should stop using them immediately.
The specific models affected by the recall are the ORIGINAL 6 bicycles from model years 2016 to 2020 and OFF 5 OFF AIR 5 and OFF 6 OFF AIR 6 bicycles from model years 2019 to 2020. These models are intended for children between 10 and 14 years of age.
The name woom is visible on the downtube in white letters and on the front of the head tube. The ORIGINAL bikes can be red, green, blue, purple, and yellow. The OFF mountain bikes have black frames with silver forks.
Woom sold these bikes exclusively online from September 2016 through October 2020 for $500-900.
The cranks on these models can break due to fatigue, potentially causing a crash. Woom Bikes USA stated, Despite the risk being very small, we are requesting that owners of the affected woom OFF, OFF AIR, and ORIGINAL bike models, please refrain from riding their bikes until the cranks have been replaced by a specialist.
What Do I Do If I Have a Recalled woom Bike? Owners of the affected woom bike models should check the brands online crank checker. If you have an affected crank, the tool will guide you to order a free replacement crankset with free shipping. An email notification will confirm that your replacement crankset is on the way.
Once you receive the crankset, you can have it installed by a local professional bike shop mechanic at an estimated cost of $40. Keep your receipt and submit it to woom via email at [email protected] for reimbursement.
