Outside has been covering Overland Expo West for the past nine years. We’ve watched as the show went from a small gathering of hardcore overland veterans to a place where thousands of people, including many who are new to this type of travel (loosely defined as backpacking out of an off-road vehicle), come to check out the latest rigs and gear. Some people might gripe that all this growth has diluted the community and crowded out once pristine, and barely known, backcountry spots. But if you take a broader view you can appreciate how overlanding has introduced a whole new community of people to the outdoors. It’s also been a lot of fun to watch brands take overland gear to places we never imagined a decade ago.
After spending three days at this year’s Overland Expo West, held in Flagstaff, Arizona in mid-May, we rounded-up the best new gear we saw, keeping both veterans and newbies in mind and choosing products that we thought were not only innovative but also had a wide audience. Here are our picks.
