The Best Running Shorts for Women in 2024
Sep 22, 2024 5:14 PM

As frequent trail runners, hikers, road runners, and adventure racers, the GearJunkie team logs a lot of miles. From Colorado mountain trails to long Oregon road runs and everything in between, we love running. And as soon as the temps climb, we live in running shorts.

The primary things we look for in a running short are that it doesnt budge while running and stays comfortable for hours on end. Basically, we want to forget were wearing shorts and just enjoy the run. Because theres nothing more annoying than having to break stride because your shorts are awkwardly riding up.

We also give high marks to shorts that dry quickly, remain stink-free, and are a good value. And there are bonus points for anything that looks good enough to wear as we swing by the farmers market or grab a cold coffee on the way home.

That said, there isnt a single pair of shorts that will fit every woman out there. Bodies and preferences vary, which is why weve broken the best running shorts into categories.

Our current author of this guide, Constance Mahoney is an experienced runner who has completed distances from local 5k’s to trail ultramarathons. She recently revamped this article, testing nearly 10 new shorts to bring you the most current, deserving selection possible.

With so many features to take into account, be sure to review our useful comparison chart for a quick side-by-side comparison of each running short. Also, visit our buyers guide and FAQ section at the end of the article for more information on how to choose the best running shorts for you.

Editors Note: We refreshed this article on April 3, 2024, adding product details and making sure our product list is up-to-date with current models, colorways, and designs.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20241

Pros Lightweight Doesn’t bunch Comfortable waistband No chafing Cons Some testers claim they run small Mary Murphy Patagonia’s most technical running shorts, the Patagonia Strider Pro ($79), are made of 90% recycled polyester and 10% spandex finished with a DWR treatment, odor control, and chafe-free seamless hem, making them super comfortable, water resistant, and longer-wearing before washing. There are three large pockets with solid stretch in them for storing essentials on the go.

One tester wore these on a recent run/scramble on a hot day in the mountains, and they were perfect for the unpredictable terrain. And even after sweating and going in and out of rivers, the lightweight brief didn’t cause any chafing.

The waistband is one of the most minimal waistbands of all the shorts weve tested, and at first glance, we thought it would cause a major muffin top effect. Even though some reviewers say they are a bit snug, we were pleasantly surprised by the fit. They do not squeeze and remain in place.

All in all, these shorts are comfortable, quick-drying, and cute.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20242

Pros Good value Lots of sizing options Fun colors Cons Lighter colors are see-through The waistline is not the most comfy Only one small key pocket Mary Murphy For $25, it’s hard to find a better value in running shorts than the Under Armour Fly-By 2.0 Shorts. Designed for warm-weather runs, the mesh side panels easily dump heat, and the lightweight polyester fabric dries quickly. We found the wide waistband comfortable, though not as great as our top choice. The waistband does include a drawstring for on-the-fly adjustments.

One of the best things about the Fly-By 2.0 is its color selection. They have bright, muted, and the more traditional darker colors. The color coordination opportunities are endless. Be forewarned that the lighter colors (especially white) are rather see-through. They do have a comfortable built-in liner. Technically speaking, this short performs well and is a solid running short for 25 bucks.

Pros UPF 30+ Lightweight Reflective detailing Cons Rides low on some Not the best waistband Back zippered pocket will not fit iPhone 13 with case Mary Murphy Nathan updated their already solid Essential Shorts to be even better. The Essential 2.0 ($65) has an updated fabric blend that allows for more stretch and less restriction. As a bonus, it now includes added sun protection with UPF 30+. Our tester loved running in these shorts, especially in hotter weather.

They have lightweight fabric, mesh liner, good breathability, and multiple stash pockets. The zippered pocket on the Essential 2.0 is located on the back right, at a slight angle. The pocket runs straight across the back of the shorts, below the waistline. When items are stashed in there, the weight can be spread out evenly. It did fit the tester’s iPhone 13 sans case. The pocket also has a nice, easy-to-locate paracord loop pull — better than a standard zipper.

The two other pockets are incorporated into the side panels. A phone only fits halfway, making these pockets better suited for storing energy chews and gels.

The waistband is on par in terms of fit with several other shorts on our list. It does ride a little low on the hips (a note for those who prefer more coverage), but it is still comfortable with the adjustable drawstring. An unfortunate update was eliminating the elastic loop for keys in the side pocket; however, the zippered back pocket can be used to secure valuables.

These shorts performed great, from stair workouts to hot trail runs — even workday commutes. The performance, coupled with the price point, makes this a great option for summer running.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20244

Pros Flat seams Reflective detailing Internal drawstring Cons Limited sizing Mary Murphy On the outside, the CEP The Run Support Shorts ($80) may look like biker shorts, but upon closer inspection, theres far more going on. These compression shorts have an anatomic internal print to help support and stabilize the thigh muscles. You will notice the triangle pattern imprinted on your legs when you take them off.

These compression shorts are not too tight and offer noticeable support in all the right places. The 9” inseam is long enough to provide full support of the hamstring, quads, and glutes while staying put. Our tester never had to pull the legs down or the waist up.  The wide high-rise waistband is comfortable, non-restrictive, and has an internal drawstring for a more custom fit. There is even a zippered back pocket large enough for your phone.

The bi-elastic fabric truly fits like a glove and feels like a second skin. It is also anti-bacterial and has a wicking finish to ensure you stay dry on your runs.

While not everyone likes the look of compression shorts, they can offer some major benefits. The CEP The Run Support Shorts are our top pick for compression shorts to help with recovery or with muscle fatigue out on a run.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20245

Pros Provides excellent coverage Comfortable waistband Reflective detailing Key loop Cons Liner slightly rides Mary Murphy For those who want a more modest fit, the On Running Shorts ($80) are the ones to choose. These shorts have a built-in compression-like liner that keeps you covered without sacrificing comfort or irritation. And speaking of comfort, the mid-rise waist does a great job of staying put where you want it without that bulge effect or digging into your skin due to its wide and soft waistband.

Its inner brief, made with 65% recycled polyamide and 35% elastane, allows for a four-way stretch that wont restrict movement. They are also moisture-wicking, which is an added bonus.

Even though jogging, climbing, and other activities made the inner lining ride up, they still did a great job of maintaining the coverage we wanted.

For runners who are looking for a short that doesnt expose more skin than they want, the On Running Shorts are a great choice.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20246

Pros Flat seams Non-irritating liner and waistband Loose, comfortable fit Cons Not quick-drying Mary Murphy We adore the REI Co-op Swiftland Running Shorts ($60). There’s a lot to love about these shorts, but the waistband is one of many features we particularly enjoy.

Initially, we didn’t think much about the waistband on these shorts. That was until we tried them on, tested them, and compared them to others. The mid-rise waistband stays in place, doesnt roll, prevents muffin tops, and is wide enough to feel like it’s not even there — in a good way.

The REI Swiftland is lightweight and breathable. Its 5 inseams provide the right amount of coverage without feeling too loose or baggy, yet still allow for stellar movement.

These shorts do come with a liner, which we have to admit is pretty comfy, and it doesnt chafe, or pinch at all.

On the downside, we didnt find these shorts to be quick-drying. They needed more drying time than other shorts on sweaty runs in temperatures above 90 degrees and when machine drying on a low setting. However, given that these shorts are all-around comfy, they are definitely one of our go-to running shorts.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20247

Pros Flattering silhouette Rated UPF 50+ Internal drawstring Sizing options Cons Liner is a bit too short Mary Murphy Are you looking for a skort option to run in? The Athleta Run With It 14 Skort ($59) is our top pick. It has a wide variety of sizing options and is made with the quality Athleta is known for.

It has a wide, comfortable waistband with an internal drawcord and a zippered pocket in the back, large enough for an iPhone 13. The outside skirt is lightweight and stretchy with a split side for a full range of motion. It is also durable and abrasion-resistant. Our tester ran through sections of overgrown high alpine shrubbery and noted the skirt never snagged nor tore despite her lower legs getting shredded.

The inner shorts have two large side pockets, one on each side. The internal hemline has a non-slip elastic ribbon that circles just the inside of the leg. The outer thigh hemline (where the pockets are) does not have the non-slip elastic ribbon.

Everybody is different, and our tester did find herself adjusting the shorts even with the non-slip ribbon. She wished the 2” inseam was a little longer, which may have prevented the inside of the shorts from riding up. We recommend you try them on to see what works best for your body.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20248

Pros Flattering Comfortable Loads of colors Cons Some colors were not as bright as displayed on screen Runs small Not ideal for those with a booty Pricey Mary Murphy Lululemon Speed Up Low-Rise ($68-78) is arguably one of the most flattering running shorts for both tall and petite body types thanks to its two inseams (2.5 and 4). They also come in 12 colors!

These shorts are not only adorable but they are also functional. They have a special feature on the rear that not only distinguishes them but also allows air to vent. On the back of the waist belt, there is a safe zipper compartment for small items.

There is an infinite drawcord on the shorts to help keep them in place, but many of us found that it wasnt necessary because the shorts are snug and run small. Therefore, we suggest sizing up. Additionally, if you have a booty, the 2.5 inseam option wont offer much coverage.

Considering the quality, functionality, and streamlined fit that a lot of us aim for in running shorts, we found these to be a great pair and absolutely cute.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 20249

Pros Split side hem Lightweight Reflective detailing Cons Previous color “Sprint” is slightly see-through Mary Murphy The Arcteryx Womens Norvan Short 3 ($90) are incredibly lightweight, breathable, and comfortable. The stretchy liner wicks moisture and has an anti-microbial treatment to manage odor. Rounding out the technical aspects, the outside of the shorts is even finished with a PFC-free water repellent, making these shorts one of our top picks.

The zippered waistband pocket on the back can comfortably fit an iPhone 13 (without a case) or secure gels, keys, and cash/cards without bouncing. The zipper has a low-profile pull tab for easy access. The waistband does have a drawstring that can tie on the outside or be pulled through the slots to be tied on the inside of the band.

The perforated waistband provides extra breathability and helps keep sweat from building up around the band. The slightly thicker band is textured, but our tester never experienced chaffing, even when wearing a running hip pack.

The Arcteryx Womens Norvan Short comes in 3” and 5” options. The 5” has a side zipper pocket, no liner, and a different waistband style but the same lightweight, water-repellent fabric. Whether you opt for the 3” or 5”, these shorts will not disappoint.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202410

Pros Bonded hems Lightweight Reflective detailing Cons “Puffing” where the waistband connects to the short Mary Murphy The Hoka Womens 4 Shorts ($58) offers a slightly longer inseam than most running shorts. The longer length helps prevent inner thigh chaffing and provides just a bit more coverage. The wide waistband is very comfortable and does not pinch or ride up.

The liner is not too tight and offers room to move. The lightweight material breathes and wicks moisture. The bonded hems on the shorts keep them lightweight and flowy, while preventing the dreaded inner thigh chafing. They also didn’t get gobbled up by our tester’s thighs, even during runs in the heat of the day.

The wider waistband allows for a small diagonal zippered pocket with a paracord tab — enough room for a gel, keys, or a card, though our tester did notice it was uncomfortable with keys in the pocket while wearing her running hip pack. It was an easy fix by putting the keys in her pack, but worth noting for those who run with a hip pack, the pocket is only good for flat items you don’t readily need access to.

Overall, these Hoka womens 4 Shorts are a great option for those looking for a little longer inseam without the added bulkiness of extra fabric.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202411

Pros Superb compression Wide waistband that doesn’t dig Flatlock seams that don’t chafe Aerodynamic Cons Not everyone’s cup of tea Costly Limited Sizing Mary Murphy Every runner needs a good pair of compression shorts. And no one knows compression better than 2XU ($70).

Whether it’s for a long-haul run or a recovery run, one tester never heads to a big race without these shorts. Shes done multiple 24-hour adventure races and 20-mile runs in these. They compress the thighs and butt in all the right places, making the muscles get less fatigued and able to recover faster.

The wide waistband hugs the waistline in a flattering way that doesn’t ever slide down. The seams are a nonissue and strategically placed so there is never a problem with chafing, even as they get wet from sweat or river crossings.

For some runners, compression shorts may not be their style; it just depends on your preference.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202412

Pros Comfortable, loose fit Weightless feel Bonded hems for zero chafing Cool, bold prints Cons May cling when wet Mary Murphy These shorts are as close as it comes to feeling like you’re running in the nude. The ultralight and airy material of Janji’s Middle Shorts ($64) coupled with the thin, non-chafing, breathable brief make us look down and make sure were wearing something.

These provide full coverage in a flattering and fun way. The mesh is highly breathable, and the stretchy waistband has a built-in drawstring cord for a custom fit.

If you dont like any restrictions or prefer a looser fit, these shorts are the ones to beat. Although one mention is that due to their flowy material, they may cling to your skin when wet.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202413

Pros Flattering Non-restrictive Lightweight Liner stays put Cons Expensive Some colors are sheer Mary Murphy Wed be remiss to review womens running shorts without mentioning the great stuff Boston-born Tracksmith has going on. While the prices are high, the materials are quality — and the fit, feel, and comfort arent too shabby either.

Our favorites overall from the brand were the Session Speed Shorts ($72), factoring in materials, fit, performance on short and long runs, durability, and price. Theyre soft and light, but not too light.

The shorts are made with a high-stretch fabric — 86% nylon and 14% elastane — and a 3.25-inch inseam. And they include a brief liner, elastic waistband, and zippered pocket.

While the Session Speed Shorts are already considered pricey, if you can splurge even more, Tracksmiths newer Strata shorts ($135) are an even comfier, ultralight performance option.

Comparing the weight and feel of the fabrics of a variety of shorts post-run; (photo/Mary Murphy) How We Tested Womans Running Shorts Our female testers at GearJunkie do a whole array of activities — but one of the most popular is running. Whether trail running, adventure racing, road running, or speed hiking, weve worn, washed, sweat in, and tested eons of shorts.

We chose the best running shorts by weighing their fit, performance, fabrics, price, and more.

For many, style is a preference, which is why we made sure to test and include running shorts of different lengths, coverage, and compression — and even a running skirt.

We tested these shorts on trails in Oregon, Colorado, California, Florida, New Mexico, and beyond — in all sorts of temperatures, humidity, and conditions. Aside from our editors and testers, we also gathered input from other women on staff to make sure we didnt miss a short.

Buyers Guide: How to Choose Running Shorts

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202415

Each of the shorts in this guide was taken out on serious real-world tests and put through the wringer; (photo/Rebecca Ross) You can run in just about anything, but having a comfortable pair of shorts sure does make pounding the pavement more enjoyable. Here are some things to consider when looking for the best running shorts.

Loose vs. Fitted Choosing between loose versus fitted running shorts is more of a personal preference. However, there are a few things to consider when deciding.

Those who want to ensure a full range of motion or who want that bare minimal feel should aim for something flowy and loose like the Tracksmith Session Speed Shorts. A looser fit is also ideal in warm weather, allowing for more air circulation.

Fitted shorts that tend to hug the body often have more stretch to them. Although there is a potential for chafing, especially on ultra runs, make sure the seams are flat and designed to mitigate chafing. An option would be the 2XU Mid-Rise Compression Shorts. Another benefit of fitted shorts is that they tend to provide more storage room to hold your items.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202416

Testing compression shorts on a run; (photo/Chelsey Magness) One other option, altogether, is going with a skort like the Athleta Run With It 14 Skort in which you can easily go from running on the trails to running errands.

Ultimately, the fit depends on what works for you and how confident you will feel while running in it.

  Liner or No Liner?

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202417

Liners on running shorts can help reduce chafe; (photo/Rebecca Ross) First, decide if you want a liner or not. A perfectly fitting liner will tend to be less chafe-inducing over long miles than inappropriate underwear. Thus, a liner eliminates the need to change undies before a run. Just throw on your shorts and go! Many of the running shorts on our list come with a liner with the exception of the compression shorts like the CEP The Run Support Shorts, so there’s a lot to choose from.

For many runners, a lined short is just simpler to deal with. But some runners find choosing the perfect underwear for their shorts works better. Look for underwear with laser-cut seams to prevent chafing in sensitive areas. However, it really is based on trial and error, so you may have to try several pairs before you find your perfect match.

Some shorts have a skintight inner liner, and others have a looser, brief-style liner. Try on a few and see what you prefer.

  Feel and Weight

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202418

Running shorts vary significantly in length and weight; (photo/Rebecca Ross) When you run, weight is an enemy. You want the lightest shorts you can find, and that starts with materials. Options we recommend that are lightweight and strike that nice balance are the Janji Middle Shorts, Tracksmith Session Speed Shorts, and Arcteryx Womens Norvan Short 3. But you may want to avoid super-wispy fabrics that can bunch or stick to skin or snag, as they can be annoying on long runs.

Choose synthetic shorts for their quick-drying properties. Cotton is nice and soft but will get bogged down with sweat.

Consider antimicrobial treatments, as many brands add a silver salt to their product to minimize odor-causing bacteria. Most brands have swapped over to ensure their liners are antimicrobial as well.

Finally, many running shorts have a small amount of reflectivity built in, like Nathan Essential 2.0 Shorts and the On Running Shorts — whether on the logo, rear, or pull tabs. Its a nice touch and helps you stay a little safer at night.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202419

Lightweight synthetic shorts dry out fast which helps prevent chafing on long runs; (photo/Conni Mahoney) Material As we said earlier, we boast about shorts being water-repellent, water-resistant, and quick-drying. If you go outside in erratic weather, youll want something that doesnt retain moisture and can even resist it.

The majority of running shorts have the aforementioned material characteristics; two excellent examples are the Arc’teryx Women’s Norvan Short and the Strider Pro Running Shorts.

Breathability is another aspect you should take into account. Once more, most shorts today are made with breathable material, but some, like Lululemon Speed Up Low-Rise, are specially designed to add even more ventilation.

SPF protection, four-way stretch, anti-microbial (which we highly recommend), and snag and tear resistance are additional qualities to think about but are not necessary.

  Pockets

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202420

Running shorts pockets come in all designs, shapes, and sizes; (photo/Conni Mahoney) Even if you carry a vest pack, pockets can really set a pair of shorts apart. Consider first any waist-belt-style pockets. When executed well, a good waist pocket will allow you to leave a pack at home for many runs. And for shorter runs, its nice to toss your keys and phone in your shorts and go. Shorts with a good pocket option are the REI Co-op Swiftland and On Running Shorts, although many running shorts on our list provide some sort of pocket.

Consider if pockets have zippers or other fail-safe measures for security. Can you access them on the go? Zip pockets are great, but also consider the zipper quality or zipper pull, as this is a possible failure point.

Larger thigh pockets are great for daily wear, but they become useless while running. Who wants a bunch of stuff bouncing off their legs? So dont worry much about big pockets on the thighs. They usually dont hurt, and do come in handy for post-run life like a stop in a coffee shop. But you wont use them while running. Unless — heres the kicker: its a loose pair of shorts with built-in compression shorts underneath and pockets. The more elastic, the more compression, the better those pockets are.

  Waistband

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202421

Some waistbands will have integrated pockets to hold keys or small snacks close to your body where they wont jostle around; (photo/Conni Mahoney) The waistband needs to fit your body perfectly. Too tight, and its going to hurt. Too loose, and your pants fall down. Some waistbands are made entirely of elastic and are bonded to the short; some have an internal elastic band that you can adjust or tighten as needed.

Youll want to find one with the right fit, but also look for a band that lays flat against the skin. We particularly liked the waistband on the REI Co-op Swiftland, Hoka womens 4 Shorts, and even the On Running Shorts. Cheap shorts will often bunch at the waistband. You want a smooth, continuous layer of fabric against the skin. Quality shorts will not behave like a scrunchie on your waist.

  Length

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202422

The length of your shorts boils down to personal preference and the type of running you plan on doing; (photo/Rebecca Ross) The preferred length of running shorts depends on the wearer. Would you prefer something with a long inseam like the 7” inseam found on the 2XU Mid-Rise Compression Shorts? Or do you prefer a short inseam that makes it feel like nothing’s there, like the Arcteryx Womens Norvan Short at a 3 inseam?

Additionally, taking individual choice into consideration, a persons height will affect where shorts will fall on them. A 5 inseam could feel too lengthy on a petite person, and vice versa. Shorts with a 2” inseam will feel more like underwear on you if youre tall. We liked the Lululemon Speed Up Low-Rise because it came with options — 2.5” and a 4” inseam.

FAQ What shorts should you wear for running? Weve mentioned a lot of the big factors above, but it bears repeating: for running — whether trail or race or road — you want something that fits well, isnt restrictive, moves with you, and is lightweight. Running shorts made from a synthetic blend or wool with added elastane for stretch are some of the best we discovered in testing.

So, what shorts should you wear? Consider a few personal preferences. Do you want a liner? Do you want a longer or shorter inseam? Do you want a pocket? Then, check out our best picks above — there are different styles and something for everyone! But at the end of the day, they all felt great and worked great for running.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202423

With so many different designs and models out there, it can be difficult to pick the best shorts for your needs. Use this guide to help narrow down the selection; (photo/Conni Mahoney) Why do womens running shorts have liners? Many womens running shorts have a built-in brief, or liner, so that underwear is not required. Liners both provide coverage underneath your shorts and are usually made of a thin, highly breathable, and wicking fabric.

For women, they can also provide some support and compression. Most liners are sewn in. A good liner wont restrict motion, will wick well, and keeps you cool.

What are the most comfortable running shorts? This varies by preference, but most runners will say that their most comfortable shorts fit well, don’t restrict motion, and are comfortable against skin — in other words, they are soft.

Some of our favorites on the list went it came to fit and soft feel include the Janji Middle Shorts, Patagonia Strider Pro shorts, and REI Co-op Swiftland.

Another factor that determines if a short is comfortable is the waistband. This has a little to do with sizing and fit, but also a lot to do with the material. Choosing a short that has a nice wide, flat, elastic waistband is always a safe bet.

Should running shorts be tight or loose? This boils down to personal preference, but it also depends on where you are running. If you are running in a very hot and humid environment, looser shorts with lighter fabric and more breathability will be a better option.

If you are competing or racing, you may want to choose tighter compression shorts for comfort and aerodynamics. Our female editors preferred looser short styles so they can better move with your body as you move, twist, and run.

The Best Running Shorts for Women in 202424

Good running shorts should allow you complete freedom of movement on trail; (photo/Mary Murphy) Which inseam is best for running shorts? For women, running short inseams vary wildly. Most shorts are either in the 2- or 3-inch inseam range or the 5-7-inch range. Some compression shorts and a few regular shorts are breaking into the longer range of 7+ inches.

Compression shorts can come in shorter or longer lengths, but will not have an additional liner. Because of the tight fit, a liner is essentially already built into the shorts. But most shorter inseam shorts will have a liner.

If you are taller, or prefer more coverage in your running wear, wed suggest looking for a short with at least a 5-inch inseam.

How long do running shorts last? Our staff members have tested lower-budget shorts whose elastic waistband has disintegrated within a year, and weve tested other shorts that have lasted more than 6 years. Washing and hanging or air-drying running shorts immediately after sweating is always a good way to keep your shorts lasting as long as possible.
